I’m a young driver here in New York and I’ll be buying my first car soon. If I purchased my car in lets say on the 21st, will I be given a grace period for me to get auto insurance for that vehicle? Also, where can I get cheap young driver insurance in New York?

Hello George! Congratulations on your new car!

Going back to your question, I am not aware of any auto insurance grace period being given in any states or much more here in New York. From what I know, for you to register your vehicle and also get license plates here, you need to purchase auto insurance from a licensed car insurance company in New York or choose to get an acceptable form of meeting the NY financial responsibility laws.

If you intend to buy a vehicle from an auto dealer here, the common practice would be that dealer will help you in obtaining registration for you new car from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The auto dealer will also submit the vehicle registration and the application for title certificate on your behalf to NY DMV.

Meanwhile, according to the NY DMV, any vehicles registered in the state of New York must have liability insurance. This insurance should meet the minimum required limits of:

  • $25,000 up to 50,000 for injury,
  • $50,000 up to 100,000 for death,
  • $10,000 for property damage

Since you cannot register a car without auto insurance then that also means you cannot drive an unregistered car. Hence, there’s no such thing as auto insurance grace period here.

Since you’ve mentioned that you are looking for cheap young driver insurance in New York, you can check different websites that give free online car insurance quotes. You can start checking this website to see if you can get an offer for cheap young driver insurance in New York.
